Librarian by Day

Bobbi L. Newman

Number 10My personally selected top ten from the links I shared on Twitter 4.3.2011 through 4.9.2011.  In no particular order

1. nope its me too! RT @VenessaMiemis: reading about imposter syndrome…. and i thought it was just me I suspect lots of library folk suffer from this.

The impostor syndrome, sometimes called impostor phenomenon or fraud syndrome, is a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments.

2. Day Against DRM: May 4th – given the uproar against HarperCollins how can librarians not participate? 🙂

3. HarperCollins Executive Calls Circulation Cap a “Work in Progress” via @LibraryRenewal

HarperCollins knew that its decision to cap ebook circulations at 26 would generate some heat, but the intensity, nonetheless, surprised the company.

“We certainly expected a variety of responses, and we knew that there would be a lot of people that had issues,” Josh Marwell, president of sales, told LJ after speaking to some 150 librarians gathered Tuesday at the Darien Library, CT, as part of “eBooks: Collections at the Crossroads,” a symposium organized by the Connecticut Library Consortium (#clctrendspotting, #clcebooks). “I think what was surprising was the intensity and how widespread it was. There were a lot of people who are not carrying ebooks now who entered into the fray,” he said.

4. Angry Birds: They Know Their Stuff « Dysart & Jones – I love me some angry birds so of course I had to read this. It’s from 10 Lessons from Angry Birds That Can Make You a Better CIO. Even if you’re not a CIO there is plenty to learn! Italics are Rebecca’s added comments to the original list.

  1. You have to play to know the rules
  2. People succeed best when their unique talents are recognized “and utilized” cuz too often, they aren’t
  3. You can’t recover from a really bad start so cut your losses, restart & try again
  4. Different problems require different specialists; seems obvious, but it’s not often the case
  5. Blowing something up isn’t necessarily felt everywhere; “You can’t just fiddle with a solution in the corner and hope that it will disburse throughout the organization. It takes a clear understanding of organizational physics to make change stick.”
  6. Most improvements are incremental; isn’t that the truth? “If you want a high score you have to be patient and accept incremental improvement by applying lessons learned from past attempts. Every once in a while, you change a strategy or accidentally discover a new tactic that results in an exponential improvement in the score, but that is very rare.”
  7. Just because you’ve mastered one task doesn’t make you master of all……sigh……true, true….
  8. You can never do the same thing exactly the same way
  9. Some goals require more birds
  10. There’s more than one way to win.

10. Why Users Are More Engaged With Social Media on Fridays

The reason is fairly obvious, says Jeremiah Owyang, a partner at the Altimeter Group: “People are heading into the weekend so they’re thinking about things besides work. They’re mentally checking out and transitioning to the weekend.”

Rick Liebling, director of digital strategy at Coyne PR, concurs: “It’s a matter of people finally pushing past the work week and coasting toward the weekend, picking their head up a bit to see what’s going on and what their friends are up to.”

However, Liebling adds that there might be another factor at work: There may be fewer posts overall on Fridays, which means a greater number of average click-throughs.

Interesting stuff as always – re: number 10. This weekend I published a blog post (the breaking the rules of presentations one) on a saturday – for the first time. Normally I write them at the weekend, publish on a Monday when people are back at work. But I figured I’d change it up and see if it had any effect – and certainly, it got a lot more views than my previous post. Obviously that was partly down to content, but it does seem like people are on twitter etc during liesure time, and are just as (if not more) likely to read stuff if it’s posted then too.

Yeah I usually write my posts on the weekends then schedule them throughout the week. Seems like they get more Tweets during the week, I’m not sure I’ve noticed a real difference in views for Saturday or Sunday post, I do occasionally post then but not often, and if I do its often the Top Ten Links, they are late this week 🙂

Oh and I scheduled a tweet of your post for today. I’ll be curious if that affects your stats. I seem to get more twitter traffic during the week so I often schedule stuff to tweet then.

I saw that you tweeted a link and my viewing figures have gone a little ballistic in the last hour – wasn’t sure if that was the Bobbi effect or not as a lot of people are tweeting it at the moment (and the presentation is one of the Top Presentation of the Day things at the top of Slideshare’s homepage), but either way, thank you! 🙂
