Librarian by Day

Bobbi L. Newman

Last week in the midst of a personal crisis (one of my doggies had emergency surgery and they are my babies) I received some exciting news – an invitation to TedX Atlanta!

For those of you not familiar with Ted and Tedx Events some background info:

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline.

TEDx

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*

This means they are all run a little differently. In the case of the Atlanta attendance is limited to 200 attendees and by invitation only.  The theme is Re:solve

Enough talk: what are the solutions?

Ten amazing speakers — each of whom is part of an active effort to solve a modern problem — will make this last TEDxAtlanta of 2010 a true call to action.

We’ll learn about the ingenuity, the boldness, the workarounds, the setbacks and the small-step-forward successes involved with tackling significant issues

I really can’t express how excited I am about this. I have been thinking I needed to get out of the libraryland bubble for some time and, well, its a TedX event!

This will be the first major non-library event I’ve attend for some time, any suggestions about what is expected of attendees would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you David. Right now I’m worried about representing libraries well to an outside group. I need to start working on my elevator speeches for what a Digital Branch Manager does and why libraries are even more important now.
