Find Your Friends on Facebook

I taught this class last night as part of the series of Internet classes I’m teaching to patrons at MRRL. I was a bit worried going into it, as almost all of the people at previous classes were seniors so I on the handout I added the websites I learned about at Internet Librarian last year.  It ended up being a very interesting mix.  I had some moms with their teenagers who wanted learn about Facebook to monitor their kids profiles, a lady interested in setting up a page for a Non-Profit, and some seniors.  I’m not sure I’ll teach this one again, probably I’ll cover it in Internet Safety that I’m doing later this year or I’ll redirect specifically to parents who want to know what their children are up to.  It’s hard to teach people about Facebook, I think it’s just one of those things that is really hard to explain.  This is probably the least well done of any presentation I’ve put together.  Find Your Friends On Facebook View more presentations from Bobbi Newman. Several people have asked me to share the classes I’m creating for the Patrons.  I’m doing half of the series, a coworker is doing the other half, so you’ll only be seeing half the lessons. The first one is Introduction to Blogging.  It’s geared towards, beginners, people don’t really know much about blogs or blogging.  I’ll cover some information about blogs then have them set up up if they like.  I’ve also put together a handout to accompany it.  I’ll be teaching this next month so I’ll let you know how it goes.  Introduction to Blogging View more presentations from Bobbi Newman. Promoting Play Through Online Discovery: Lego Building

Meredith Farkas led off this two part session with great information about her Five Weeks to a Social Library program. This was the first, free, grass roots, completely online program designed to teach Librarians about social software. It was almost completely done with open source, free software tools such as Drupal, Mediawiki and BlipTV. Her tips to help you (and me) steal this idea: tools can not be a barrier be flexible provide ways for people to have many different conversations perpetual beta Helene Blowers presented the second half of the session.  I’d talked to her the day before, but it was just wonderful to hear her speak.  I’ve been following her for over a year and coping her Learning 2.0 program is what led to my new positions and fancy title Most importantly dont worry about being an expert, we need to think of ourselves as players.  It’s great to hear someone like her say this! To become a knowledge player: Take 15 mins a day Read 5 blogs a day create a play box – use del.icio.us give yourself and other permission to play Become a discovery guide: its about learning, not training removed the classroom remember exposure

Training Adults: Getting and Keeping Attention

October 29, 2007

Sunday morning I attended a pre-conference workshop on training adults. I was a little disappointed in the content. It was aimed towards people who have never done any training and geared towards all day workshops. Since I work at a public library almost all of the training for both the staff and the public is an hour long maybe two. So a lot of the tips and techniques will be hard to apply. My impression from the other people who spoke up is they will have the same problems. Some of the good things I did get and will be using Guidelines – no matter how short my training sessions are I can take a couple of minutes to lay down guidelines at the beginning. This will help with any problems later in the class such as people dominating the conversation, side conversations, etc. SOT – Start on time, Stop on Time, Stay on Topic – oh how I wish we did this at my library, even for meetings, no one bothers to show up on time and often the person “hosting” the meeting choices to wait for that person rather than respecting that the rest of us got there
