How to Extend the Due Date of Your Library eBook on the Kindle

Just a friendly tip from your friendly online librarian. It is pretty easy to “extend” the due date of the library ebook you check out to your kindle, just turn your wireless connection off until you’re done with it. This will allow you to keep reading the book until you’re done. The title won’t expire until you reactivate your wireless connection. Can’t remember to turn your wireless off or just don’t want to keep it off all the time? Consider that handy email notice telling you that you have three days left that you get from Amazon (not your local library), you know the one that includes a link to buy it from Amazon, the signal to turn your wireless off if you aren’t done reading the book. When you’re done, turn your wireless connection back and on the book will “expire” as usual. The Library is…

For National Library Week we asked patrons what the library is to them. These are some of the responses so far, they go all around the pillar. I also took individual pictures of them, go look at them, they’re awesome! You have to forgive me this is one of the last chances I’ll have to brag about all the awesome things MRRL does and I’m extra proud since this was my idea! Some of my personal favorites Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Share on FriendFeed Share on netvibes share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tumblr it Buzz it up Subscribe to the comments on this post Print for later Tell a friend

Saturday Day in the Life of a Librarian – Round 2, Day 1

I took these notes today as part of The Day in the Life project, if you would like to read more please the wiki, if you’re interested in how it all got started read this post and this one. Saturday – It’s my weekend to work. Saturday and Sundays are very interesting days, but they are considerably different from how I usually spend my days so I think they are worth documenting. 5:30 am – the alarm goes off, I get up make coffee, check the news and weather.  Note that it snowed a bit over night, no idea how much snow they got at work (30 miles away) so I plan to get in early just in case. 7:00 leave for the library, I listen to a lot of books on cd during my commute, this weeks book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. 7:40 -9:00 arrive at the library, it snowed a litte, so I salt the walk out back before walking through the building and unlocking everything.  Count money, put out todays newspapers, turn on computers, confirm that all the staff showed up.  Ensure lunches are coordinated between Children, Teen, Circulation and the Public Computer Center.

I work with some amazing people!

I know I could be busier but right now it’s hard to imagine how. Between the regular duties of my work week (including working this weekend) I’m putting finishing touches on the 4 day workshop on Web 2.0 that I’ll be teaching next week. Four days is a long time to talk, even for me, even as a cohost. Despite that I have to take some time to acknowledge some amazing coworkers. Our Collection Development Librarian / Reference Manager / Teen Services Manager has started blogging for the Day in the Life Project! She was first introduced to blogging back in Learning 2.0 so she had a blog, but didn’t really have a use for it. Yesterday we reviewed everything and she’s already started writing. I warned her it can be addictive! Several weeks ago our Humanities Program Coordinator / Librarian volunteered to make some videos to promote some of his movie programs. He hosts several movie series programs that are wildly popular, so a mini movie to promote his movies seems perfect. He shot this video at home on his own time! I know the sound is a bit faint, I’m not sure what to do about it. At

Friday & Saturday – days in the life of a librarian

Friday Technically I’m off because I work this coming weekend.  I cleaned the apartment, cooked, went to the gym.  I also check  all email accounts and see a request from one of the other Librarians, she needs someone to cover the Reference Desk for her Monday, I was planning on taking Monday off, but I tell her if she can’t find anyone else I’ll do.  I end up doing it for her, which moves my day off to Friday Time to work on presentations!  I’m cohosting a 4 day workshop (pdf) coming up that is hosted by MOREnet & the Missouri State Library teaching Librarians about how they can use web 2.0 at their library.  We did a similar workshop in February and it was so popular that they asked us to come back and tripled our talk time.  I’ll be doing two presenations at our upcoming state library conference in October and even though it’s early I put some time into both of these.  I have three patron training classes left this year.  We’ve been doing series of classes including basic and advanced (I teach the advanced ones).  They have been really popular with the patrons.  I take a look at what
