What DO you wish your patrons knew?

I copied this post from The MLXperience to ask you – What DO you wish your patrons knew? Seattle Books Examiner’s Danielle Dreger-Babbitt took an informal poll of librarians in Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York City, and Portland about what they wish library patrons knew or did. Here’s the shortlist: 1. Use us! 2. We support Intellectual Freedom 3. Be respectful of our library patrons 4. Pay your fines 5. Return your items on time 6. Tell us what you like 7. If possible, check out all materials at once from the circulation desk 8. Please listen to us the first (or even second) time we say something 9. Practice good hygiene 10. Let your librarian know what materials you’d like to see on the shelf 11. The library has almost as many DVD’s as your local video store 12. Hang up your cell phone when you come to the reference desk (or circulation desk) 13. Please be patient with us 14. We like it when you thank us 15. Please respect the desk barrier 16. Come to our programs! 17. Do not leave your child (or children) unattended- for their safety 18. Ask us what we read 19.

Library is…?

A couple of weeks ago I was in Denver for vacation and we stopped at the Denver Art Museum.  In addition to all the traditional art one expects to see in a museum they also had some patron contribution displays.  Throughout the museum notebooks were set out and patrons could record their thoughts and feelings about the art.  They could take the pages or leave them.  There were poems about art and belief and creativity painted on the walls that were taken from another patron display.   My favorite exhibit was this one, in the picture, the wall simple said “Art is….” and there were sticky notes and pencils.  They were so widely ranging in definition is was amazing and through provoking.  I’d love to see a library do this with “library is….” in fact I pitched it to my director today, he’s thinking maybe National Library Week.  I think it would be a great way to get an informal sampling of what your patrons think your library is and want it to be.  Have any other libraries done anything like this? Is Library 2.0 and/or Web 2.0 really serving our patrons?

I saw and participated in a discussion on this on one of my email lists last week. I thought I’d take more time to write out my thoughts and responses on my blog.  Sarah posted this over in MaintainIT but it looks like she didn’t open it up for comments so I’m going to. Here is part of the email I sent the list One of the problems I’ve seen with 2.0 is the library runs out and gets a blog or facebook page or whatever and declares themselves 2.0. They don’t consider who they are trying to reach, what they are trying to accomplish, how they will accomplish it or measure success. We need to take the same approach to 2.0 that we’ve taken to library services for years. Not every tool will work for every library and community. Some libraries have wildly successful film programs or extensive tools for small businesses, but not every library does. We look at what our community needs and what works best for them. The same approach should be taken with your web tools. My answer is yes.  I think there are many aspects of Library 2.0 (and web 2.0) that are providing

Wednesday – A day in the life of a librarian

Wednesday 7/9/08 Tonight is one of my late days because computer/internet classes are tonight.  Nikki & I take turns teaching a series of classes that vary from basic to advanced.  Tonight Nikki is teaching Microsoft Word so I get to be Vanna, assisting, troubleshooting & helping patrons when they run into a problem.  I get up and after making coffee, check all email accounts from home. Then since I don’t have to be at work until this afternoon I try to relax so I a play video game.  When I get too frustrated because I’m dying I check FriendFeed and Twitter and see Lori Reed has created a wiki for the Day in the Life idea.! awesome! Apparently I do have the ability to start a meme.  I pretty much waste the morning though, it’s hard to be productive in the mornings when I work that night.  At noon I arrive in the office, check my email again, send replies, forward etc.  I send an email to a database vendor thanking him for the personal training he gave our staff last month and ask him about database stats, Then I head across the street, (library staff work in two different buildings) to talk with the Head Reference Librarian.  Just

Teaching Patrons about Flickr

The first Online Picture Sharing class was last week and the second is this week, we only have 15 laptops for the patrons to use so we have to have multiple sessions.  I choose to focus on Flickr vs one of the many other online picture sharing sites inpart because MRRL has a Flickr account and because of the Social aspects of Flickr.  Online Picture Sharing View more presentations from Bobbi Newman. I’ve started working on the next set of classes, one of them being Online Safety, this is a hard one for me because it’s important to me to teach people to be safe without making them feel like the internet is full of dangers.   Any suggestions?
