What DO you wish your patrons knew?

What DO you wish your patrons knew?

I copied this post from The MLXperience to ask you – What DO you wish your patrons knew? Seattle Books Examiner’s Danielle Dreger-Babbitt took an informal poll of librarians in Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York City, and Portland about what they wish library patrons knew or did. Here’s the shortlist: 1. Use us! 2. We support Intellectual Freedom 3. Be respectful of our library patrons 4. Pay your fines 5. Return your items on time 6. Tell us what you like 7. If possible, check out all materials at once from the circulation desk 8. Please listen to us the first (or even second) time we say something 9. Practice good hygiene 10. Let your librarian know what materials you’d like to see on the shelf 11. The library has almost as many DVD’s as your local video store 12. Hang up your cell phone when you come to the reference desk (or circulation desk) 13. Please be patient with us 14. We like it when you thank us 15. Please respect the desk barrier 16. Come to our programs! 17. Do not leave your child (or children) unattended- for their safety 18. Ask us what we read 19.

Library Learning 2.1 Presentation

October 1, 2008

I’m at the Missouri Library Association Conference this week and today was the first of my two presentations.  Originally Robin & I were going to co-present (we each write half the lessons) but because she’s so crazy busy and I felt bad for bailing on her for the MaintianIT Webinar, I offered to do this one on my own. I work with some amazing people!

August 7, 2008

I know I could be busier but right now it’s hard to imagine how. Between the regular duties of my work week (including working this weekend) I’m putting finishing touches on the 4 day workshop on Web 2.0 that I’ll be teaching next week. Four days is a long time to talk, even for me, even as a cohost. Despite that I have to take some time to acknowledge some amazing coworkers. Our Collection Development Librarian / Reference Manager / Teen Services Manager has started blogging for the Day in the Life Project! She was first introduced to blogging back in Learning 2.0 so she had a blog, but didn’t really have a use for it. Yesterday we reviewed everything and she’s already started writing. I warned her it can be addictive! Several weeks ago our Humanities Program Coordinator / Librarian volunteered to make some videos to promote some of his movie programs. He hosts several movie series programs that are wildly popular, so a mini movie to promote his movies seems perfect. He shot this video at home on his own time! I know the sound is a bit faint, I’m not sure what to do about it. At

Joshua M. Neff’s big announcement

Joshua M. Neff’s big announcement

wow, blogging before I’ve finished my second cup of coffee.  It takes something pretty exciting to make that happen.  Well this IS exciting!  Josh has had us on pins and needles for the last couple of weeks, waiting for his big announcement.  He finally made it this morning!  Library Society of the World has a new website,  head over to Josh’s site to learn more and join up!  Not a member of LSW?  You should join, it’s a free, it’s causal, and you’ll meet some great people.  Josh kicked off the group with the goal of being an equal place for all people interested in libraries and doing some good in libraryland.  In his own words. By joining the Society, you are joining a world-spanning group of library professionals and library advocates, dedicated to furthering the role of librarians, archivists, information professionals, and information educators through communication and collaboration. The LSW is about people, not buildings (although some of us think architecture is sexy). It’s about friendship, not organization. It’s about creating and fostering opportunities, not building barriers and divisions. Go join!  Yes, even you people outside of the US, it’s Library Society of the World! Web2.0 levels playing field

Web2.0 levels playing field

Or at least social hierarchy.  Last year was my first Internet Librarian Conference, after being in my new position as Digital Services Librarian for only 2 months I hadn’t had an opportunity to meet many people face to face and there were a lot of names I didn’t recognize.  I attended presentations and met people from the likes of Jenny Levine, Aaron Schmidt, Amy Kearns, David Lee King, Michael Porter, Jason Griffey, Amanda Etches-Johnson, TomIpri, Christie Hill, Helene Blowers, Erin Downey Howerton, Joshua M. Neff and many more.  I’m striving to be like these people and one of the things I love about sites like Twitter & Facebook and Blogs is that it allows little ole me to keep in touch and often communicate in real ways with these people.  I can particpate in community and conversations that wouldn’t have been possible with just email or static websites.  Even better, for someone like me who has a hard time putting names with face, most of these have a little picture of the person! Why am I writing this?  It’s been a rough couple of weeks for me work-wise and I’m remembering all the things I’m grateful for.  My connections in Libraryland, however distance they may be, are something I’m
