Saturday Day in the Life of a Librarian – Round 2, Day 1

I took these notes today as part of The Day in the Life project, if you would like to read more please the wiki, if you’re interested in how it all got started read this post and this one. Saturday – It’s my weekend to work. Saturday and Sundays are very interesting days, but they are considerably different from how I usually spend my days so I think they are worth documenting. 5:30 am – the alarm goes off, I get up make coffee, check the news and weather.  Note that it snowed a bit over night, no idea how much snow they got at work (30 miles away) so I plan to get in early just in case. 7:00 leave for the library, I listen to a lot of books on cd during my commute, this weeks book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. 7:40 -9:00 arrive at the library, it snowed a litte, so I salt the walk out back before walking through the building and unlocking everything.  Count money, put out todays newspapers, turn on computers, confirm that all the staff showed up.  Ensure lunches are coordinated between Children, Teen, Circulation and the Public Computer Center.

Day (Week) in the Life of a Library _____ Round 2 begins Monday!

That’s right round two will kick off Monday January 26th. It looks like we have enough people interested to schedule round two. Its easy to play along, 1) just blog your day or week which ever you prefer. Add your information to the wiki and 2 ) be sure to tag your posts librarydayinthelife. The original idea was to give people and potential LIS students an idea of what the average day in the life of a Librarian or Library-fill-in-the-blank was like. I’m looking forward to seeing the new posts from new people and the difference between the previous round and this one.  Ready, set, go! Libraries looking to save money? Consider telecommuting!

Libraries looking to save money? Consider telecommuting!

Talking about the blurred line between home and work when I was writing about Twitter started me thinking about telecommuting.  Writing about the recession and it affects on libraries got me thinking about telecommuting.  Let’s talk about telecommuting, it seems to be something libraries have been slow to embrace.  Yes, I know the old standard that we sit at the reference desk all day and read books, but anyone actually working a library knows that’s not true.  Many libraries are short on space and funding and much could be done from home, at least one day a week, so why aren’t we looking more closely at telecommuting? Given the tough economic times and the reports that show telecommuting saves employers money and increases productivity it seems a good time to point to some information about it.  Employers see savings in multiple areas and it helps to boost employee morale. According to Business Week Benefits of letting employees work from outside the office include keeping cars off the road, helping a company to bolster its green bona fides. But the practice can also foster employee retention, boost worker productivity, and slash real estate costs. There are some cons too, according to this

What DO you wish your patrons knew?

What DO you wish your patrons knew?

I copied this post from The MLXperience to ask you – What DO you wish your patrons knew? Seattle Books Examiner’s Danielle Dreger-Babbitt took an informal poll of librarians in Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York City, and Portland about what they wish library patrons knew or did. Here’s the shortlist: 1. Use us! 2. We support Intellectual Freedom 3. Be respectful of our library patrons 4. Pay your fines 5. Return your items on time 6. Tell us what you like 7. If possible, check out all materials at once from the circulation desk 8. Please listen to us the first (or even second) time we say something 9. Practice good hygiene 10. Let your librarian know what materials you’d like to see on the shelf 11. The library has almost as many DVD’s as your local video store 12. Hang up your cell phone when you come to the reference desk (or circulation desk) 13. Please be patient with us 14. We like it when you thank us 15. Please respect the desk barrier 16. Come to our programs! 17. Do not leave your child (or children) unattended- for their safety 18. Ask us what we read 19.

How I started blogging meme

How I started blogging meme

It looks like there is another Library themed meme making the rounds, this one started by Meredith Farkas at Information Wants To Be Free, I spotted over on David’s blog weeks ago but never imagined it would get around to me. Both The Bald Trainer & Beth Tribe tagged me for this one, so I better get on it. Q1) How or why did I start to get into blogging? I’d had a personal blog for a while and in fact I’d started this blog at one point then deleted all the posts in July of 2007 to get a fresh start.  I started this blog as more of a record for me, as I said in one of my very first posts, as a record of my adventures in libraryland. Q2) How did I gain an audience? I’m not sure.  As I look back over some of my older posts I cringe a little.  Some of what I thought were my best posts got very little attention (hey look! There’s the first time I said “if you build it they will come – or maybe not”, I say this in most of my presentations)  I’d like to think it’s
