My Favorite Tools In 10 Installments: 1. Google Tools

I regularly get asked when I sleep, or how I “do it all”. I’m never really sure how to respond, I’m just me. I just go through my days, my routine and well do stuff. But I took a look around at some of the tools and shortcuts I use and thought I might do a little mini series. So here it is, in 10 installments! Some will be long (like this one) and some will be short. I hope you find something useful! Tool One: Google Tools It’s no secret I’m a Google fan, pretty much my whole professional life lives on Google. For that reason I use the Two Step Verification process and change my password frequently, especially after traveling or using unsecure wifi access. Call me crazy or paranoid if you like, but hey I’d be screwed if I ever lost access and you’re about to find out why. Calendar The Calendar, well actually 6 calendars if you count tasks which also shows up on the calendar and has its own color code (each calendar has its own color code). My primary or main calendar is my work calendar. This is important because I sync Outlook with my Google

Be the Master of Your Domain, How to Conquer Your Feed Reader

I’ve heard many of my friends comment that they are overwhelmed by their Google Reader, so much so that not only are they regularly declaring Reader bankruptcy but that they are avoiding it all together.  My information professional friends, Google Reader is a TOOL, do not allow it to inspire fear and loathing, it’s there to meet your needs.  Here are some suggestions for mastering it. Don’t be afraid to declare bankruptcy For me this means in the weeks leading up to and during and after conferences I will likely declare bankruptcy once a week. I don’t wait until the end, it’s too overwhelming, I just go in once a week, fully knowing I’m going to mark all as read and do it. If you’re declaring bankruptcy too often you are subscribed to more than you can keep up with, if that is 20, 200, or 2,000 it doesn’t matter.  You put those feeds in there because you thought they were important. You need to figure out what the most important ones are, so you can keep up with those. It’s ok to let the others go. Better that than feeling bad. You need to figure out what you’re looking for in feeds, what information

How do you organize your FeedReader?

How do you organize your FeedReader?

We’re covering feedreaders in the workshop today so I thought I’d ask, how do you organize your feed reader?  I recently made the switch from bloglines to GoogleReader.  I’m still  playing with the many tools it gives you. I’m a big fan of using folders or labels to organize and prioritize my feeds.   The friends folder is pretty self-explanitory, any time something pops up in there I check it first.  The daily folder I don’t always read daily but it’s high priority feeds and I try to keep it to 10 feeds or less.   Day in the Life are the blogs that made it on the Day in the Life wiki.  I have several different folders for the feeds tracking my library.  I think I need to break out “Library stuff” into smaller groups though, any suggestions on more labels?  How do you organize your feeds?  How do you prioritize what gets read first?  Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Share on FriendFeed Share on netvibes share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tumblr it Buzz it up Subscribe to the comments on this post Print for later Tell a friend
