My title is Digital Branch Manager, I work for system that serves 4 counties with 8 branches (9 counting mine).

In the morning before work with coffee in hand I turn on my PC to check Facebook, Twitter & my gmail account.

I see a trackback to my transliteracy page so I check out the post, Sunday Night Ponderance from Andy Woodworth. I leave a comment with my 2 cents and resolve to finish the new transliteracy slideshow by the end of the week so I can post it next Monday.

I proof read my post on the echo chamber, set to publish later in the day.

First thing I do at work is review my notes from last Friday and create the day’s to-do list.
I then proceed to:

update the website including adding job seekers page, created by staff
hand out monkeys
email director about borrowing her nook to make videos on using ebooks
check on day in the life – wow! holy hash tag on twitter!
work on Kiwanis club presentation for Tuesday. 15 minutes to talk about digital services.
answer a lot of emails
sketch out plans to do screen-casts of downloading Overdrive ebooks & eaudiobooks
turn in an invoice to be paid

At 3:30 I’m driven home by terrible headache blame attempts to kick my diet pepsi habit. I rest until 6:30 then time to get back to it. I put the tea kettle on and:

check gmail, answer & send emails
response to blog comments
peruse #libday4 tag on twitter, realize so many people are participating there is no way I can keep up and respond to all of them.
looked a pool on flickr
looked at Davids post on foursquare. Realize despite having no interest in anyone knowing exactly where I am ever, I should check it out. I sign up for an account and install it on my Pre. It can’t find my location. awesome. I give up and get back to work on my presentation for Kiwanis.
chat with another libraryland person about the connection between place of employment and personal blogs.
chat with a different person about upcoming interview & give what tips I can
text back and forth with yet another person about transliteracy

At 10 I turn off the computer and phone and put in some down time before bed.Similar Posts:

Yes it’s that time again, time to start thinking about participating in the Library Day in the Life Project. Will you blog, Twitter, take photos, or show video? or some combination of all?

For those of you not familiar with the project in a nutshell library works of all types document a day or a week of their work life. You can check out the original blog post, my explanation of why I do it, or the wiki for more info.

Due to the high number of participants in July 2009 I’ve made some changes to the wiki hopefully will create a little order for those trying to follow along. I moved the previous list off the front page to its own page. I created a new page for Round 4 January 2010 and added a number column to the table.

I also made some changes to the format based on my observations from the last round.

Include your job title & type of library in your blog post or video to help readers
For the Twitters a hash tag for #libday4 (if you have a better one let me know, speak now or forever hold your peace).

Round 4 of the Library Day in the Life Project will begin on January 25th 2010. Any one who works in a library can participate. You may share your day (or week) on your blog, Twitter, Flickr and/or YouTube (or any other way you choose. If you have none of these don’t worry, just create a new page in the wiki and post your day there. Once you decided on your format(s)

Create a PB Wiki account (it’s free)!
Add your name, your job title (so we can see what you do at a glance) and a link to your blog, Twitter, Flickr and/or YouTube account to the wiki.
Start capturing your day.
1. Include your job title and the type of library you work in at the beginning of your post.
2. Include a link back to the wiki
Bloggers, Flickr & YouTube users tag your posts with librarydayinthelife. Twitters use the #libday4
After your first post come back and edit this page to change your blog link to a link to your tagged posts. please link directly to your day in the life post(s) and not to your blog in general.
Add your Flickr photos or videos to the Group on Flickr

Thursday was a rather unremarkable day for me, so I’ll spare you most of the details

Checked email, tried to post notes from Day in the Life, but thanks to Dreamhost my site has been down most of the week. Unhappy does not do justice to my mood about this.

Got to work, talked with IT, we’re using the multimedia room for the Handheld Librarian conference later today and I’ve never used it before and wanted to be sure I set everything up correctly. Also gave me a chance to ask the staff member to be a part of Super Friends, I’d be missing her all week. She said yes – excellent now we have one member of IT on board.

Room set up and then back to my office. A staff member brought me peaches! Lots to do today but a lot of time will be taken up with Handheld. Spent most of my day in the Multimedia room for the Conference, we had some trouble getting in as I understand a lot of people did.

Wrote a post on my blog for library staff

Took the boys for a long walk even though it was sprinkling the whole time, we all enjoyed it!

Stayed up way too late reading the night before (I guess you never grow out of this!), so really need the coffee this morning!

First thing in the morning, prepare for and attend Branch Manager meeting at our Mildred L. Terry Branch. Its our newest one, we haven’t even had the grand opening ceremony yet. This meeting took up most of the morning so go look at the pictures of the branch for something fun!

Teen Programs Meeting – I’m there to find out what they need/want from a Digital Branch, good information

Run downstairs between meetings to check on something for tomorrow, run into a staff member I want to be a member of Super Friends, talk with him about it, he’s in! Hurray!

Database Committee Meeting- we’re looking at what we have and what we need to add over the next year. It goes really well.

Grab peaches on the way home. I am really tired tonight and decide this should be my night away from the computer, I make myself take one once a week. Similar Posts:

Wake up before the alarm, whats up with that?
Coffee, email, Twitter, Facebook
Discovered email response from a comment I left on a Day in the Life blog last night asking about the recipe for roasted peach ice cream – hurray! I will SO be making this this weekend
Check calendar and weather before leaving for work, only one meeting, lets hope it stays that way, and its supposed to rain, scrap original outfit that include purple suede pumps (suede and rain are not friends)
Add a couple of things to my Alice.com shopping list, hope I get to 6 (free shipping for 6 or more items) before I run out of contact solution. I’ve used Alice.com twice and so far I love it, I compared prices on my first order to Target and Alice was cheaper on everything but canned dog food. Plus using it keeps me out of Target and away from impulse buys, that’s a money saving win right there.
Arrive at work, email, then take a look at our online resources page in preparation for Database committee meeting tomorrow, notice we don’t have a medical one, add medline plus which leads to too much time tweaking the page. The website had gone through many many hands over the last couple of years, as a result the code is a mess. I try not to get too caught up in fixing is though as we’ll completely replacing it, hopefully by the end of the year.
Sent Buffy’s post to our teen librarian to see if she thinks the kids my like something like that from the public library
head downstairs with the EEE (which desperately needs a cool nickname) to do some writing in the study carrels. I do this because it gets me away from my desk, otherwise I might never leave it, it gets me some sunshine, despite being on Management row, I have no window.
Working outside the office
Write definition of Super Friends will do and what I’m looking for in potential members )the official name of this group is FIT – Future, Innovation and Technology)
Notice that people are using #librarydayinthelife as a hash tag on twitter, wish we could have thought up something shorter to use, maybe next time
Think about how being Management limits how much of my day can really be blogged
Notice blog is down, getting a 500 error, email Blake, he emails back within 5 minutes that he’s on it and will keep me updated hurrah!
Go through my Friends, CVL (any mentions of my library on the net) and Daily folders in Google Reader, these are my priority reads. I have 12 folders total.
Think about how one obstacle to a culture of change is the Martyr Syndrome, remind myself I bought The No Complaining Rule to read and make a note to locate it tonight when I get home to see if it address this at all, also book mark some pages, have a Twitter and email conversation about it, think maybe it deserves a blog post next week
Just try to take it, I triple dog dare ya
ran errands, post office, picked up new meds for Big Dog, they’ve changed his dosage again, back in my office
Look for fun stuff to give out to staff
Talk with Head of Teen Services about the email I sent her earlier, trying to decide if we should do bags for Teens or Teachers, call ends with her saying – something just fell gotta go.
Back to my to-do list
Spend some time in Twitter, see a remind that Computers in Libraries deadline is early this year 9/15/2009, send tweet out for co-presenters, get good responses, put proposal writing on my calendar for Saturday
Work on writing our Social Media Policy part of which includes Flickr. All of this will be included in the Digital Branch Guide/Bible/Manifesto. I can find a LOT of libraries using Flickr but no one with a policy addressing it.
Small Dog prepares to leap
Meeting with a reference employee about being part of the Super Friends, take a walk down stairs with him at 5 so we can continue conversation. End up having a great convo with him and the Head of Reference about general online needs.
Back to my office, its a ghost town up here!
Head home, plans for tonight walk and play with the guyzos, read Day in the Life blogs, work on Policies, reading and listening to new Diana Krall album

Monday 7/07/08

Get up check both email accounts from home. In addition to my work account I use a gmail account for many things work related, email lists, notifications, etc. I address anything that needs immediate action, save the rest for when I actually get in the office.
Get ready and head to meet my carpool buddy, I carpool as often as I can, but my schedule is wacky so usually just one day a week.
Get to work, check email again (I get a lot of email). Actually got through email, respond, delete or forward as necessary.
Work on my budget, including review this years expenditures, and proposal for next years budget.
Prepare monthly report for Director for board meeting. including a compilation of comments and stats from MRRL’s blog, Flickr, Facebook etc, Library Learning 2.1 and any programs I’ve done in the last month.
Check voicemail, return call to patron who is having problems downloading eAudio book from NetLibrary.
Get tasked by director to check out patron complaint about Ancestry.com not working, check with the Head Reference Librarian, realize it’s software issue, redirect to IT.
Talk with Head Reference Librarian about possibility of new medical database and proposal she’s working on.
Work on Internet safety presentation I’m doing for the patrons in 2 weeks
Through out the day I’ve check FriendFeed, Twitter and chated with different coworkers face to face.
Car pool home (from here on out I’m off the clock)
Talk about work with coworker on the way home.
Write blog post about doing A Day in the Life, really hope it takes off.
Read library blogs
Check all accounts again before going to bed
