Why did you particpate in the Library Day in the Life Project?

Was is self promoting narcissism? Desire to share the most boring mundane details of your life with others (wake up, make coffee)? Or something else. Sarah Faye Cohen shares why she didn’t participate and she’s wondering why others did. A legitimate question, actually one I’m curious about myself. The first two rounds of Library Day in the Life were small, I think less than 30 people total, then somehow this one took off, I’m not sure if it was David’s post or the mention on LISnews or what, but all of a sudden there were loads of people I’d never interacted with doing it (over 200 last count). Whoa. Awesome. Scary. Exciting. I can’t speak to why everyone did it but I can speak for myself. “who we are writing these memes for.” Well, the whole thing started because I look at my blog stats and the search terms used to bring people there, the most popular ones were: librarian’s day, what it like to be librarian, what’s it like to work as a librarian, you get the idea. I assumed, because how could I know, that these were searches done by people considering librarianship or just curious.  So I

Saturday Day in the Life of a Librarian – Round 2, Day 1

I took these notes today as part of The Day in the Life project, if you would like to read more please the wiki, if you’re interested in how it all got started read this post and this one. Saturday – It’s my weekend to work. Saturday and Sundays are very interesting days, but they are considerably different from how I usually spend my days so I think they are worth documenting. 5:30 am – the alarm goes off, I get up make coffee, check the news and weather.  Note that it snowed a bit over night, no idea how much snow they got at work (30 miles away) so I plan to get in early just in case. 7:00 leave for the library, I listen to a lot of books on cd during my commute, this weeks book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. 7:40 -9:00 arrive at the library, it snowed a litte, so I salt the walk out back before walking through the building and unlocking everything.  Count money, put out todays newspapers, turn on computers, confirm that all the staff showed up.  Ensure lunches are coordinated between Children, Teen, Circulation and the Public Computer Center.

I work with some amazing people!

I know I could be busier but right now it’s hard to imagine how. Between the regular duties of my work week (including working this weekend) I’m putting finishing touches on the 4 day workshop on Web 2.0 that I’ll be teaching next week. Four days is a long time to talk, even for me, even as a cohost. Despite that I have to take some time to acknowledge some amazing coworkers. Our Collection Development Librarian / Reference Manager / Teen Services Manager has started blogging for the Day in the Life Project! She was first introduced to blogging back in Learning 2.0 so she had a blog, but didn’t really have a use for it. Yesterday we reviewed everything and she’s already started writing. I warned her it can be addictive! Several weeks ago our Humanities Program Coordinator / Librarian volunteered to make some videos to promote some of his movie programs. He hosts several movie series programs that are wildly popular, so a mini movie to promote his movies seems perfect. He shot this video at home on his own time! I know the sound is a bit faint, I’m not sure what to do about it. At

Day in the life of a librarian – Summary

July 19, 2008

As of writing this (10:30 am central time 7/19/08 ) there are over 30 people signed up on the wiki (thank you again Lori for having the smarts to make one!) I hope this can be an ongoing project with new people continuing to sign up and maybe people who participated now can do it again. I’ve read some really great posts and I’m not even though them all yet.  I do have to point out somone who took a different approach to the Project. One of the other Librarians at MPOW has agreed to do a series of guest posts about her week July 28th – August 1st.  She is our Collection Development Librarian, so you’ll be getting a completely different view of my work place. Some information that probably should have been included in my first post - My job title and what it means. I’m the Digital Services Librarian at the Missouri River Regional Library, a public library in the Midwest serving about 85,000 people.  So what does that mean?  You’ve seen from the posts what I do some days, here is a more official run down of my duties Identify, investigate, and use emerging technology to enable easy access to information Anticipate
