8. cool and creepy - Discovery and Facebook Show How a Pandemic Could Affect You -ok this probably should have been number one because it’s so cool and creepy at the same time. Really check it out.

The website created by this application shows a fake newsfeed featuring your friends’ names and profile images alongside status updates, links, pictures, and comments about the disease, government-mandated quarantine zones, emergency services availability (or lack thereof) and much more. You’ll even see some watchable, UGC-style videos created by Discovery in the feed.

The updates contain all the trappings of real social media posts — ribbon-bedecked avatars, hashtags, how-to posts — but with a scary, sad, survivalist twist.

I walked into my local public library in London the other day and got a rude shock. All of my favorite librarians were gone. They’d been replaced by machines. Where the circulation desk once stood — manned by a friendly soul with whom I’d chat about politics or the weather or the latest London Review of Books — I now swiped my library card and pushed a button that said “borrow” or “return.”

They’d also done some remodeling. This particular branch sits in an elegant 1930s building located in the garden of the house where the poet John Keats wrote his ”Ode to a Nightingale.” The main room — once cluttered with books that literally spilled onto the floor — now is a shadow of its former self. Rather than books, the main thing on display would appear to be tables — artfully dotted around the room as if this were a café or the premier-class lounge for an airline

Stop being busy and your job is half done.

Think about how busy we are, and how it has become a way of bragging: I’m so busy, I must be important.

“I have a million things to do! I never have time for anything! I can’t slow down — I’m too busy.” This is thought to be a good thing in a society where we must be productive, active, occupied.

But it’s a fool’s game. Busy is simply noise, action without meaning, lots of little unimportant things rather than a few important ones.

Stop being busy. Just decide to stop, today.

A market now exists for fulfilling information needs. Libraries are one player in that market, but only one player, and not the best known or maybe even the best. The bar to entry into that market is low, so there will be more entrants. When what was formerly a solo operator in a market space suddenly faces competition, said operator must change its business model or go out of business. My conclusion? Libraries need to give up the notion that question answering is a core service of the library.

9. 12 Things Good Bosses Believe

I have a flawed and incomplete understanding of what it feels like to work for me.

My success — and that of my people — depends largely on being the master of obvious and mundane things, not on magical, obscure, or breakthrough ideas or methods.

Having ambitious and well-defined goals is important, but it is useless to think about them much. My job is to focus on the small wins that enable my people to make a little progress every day.

One of the most important, and most difficult, parts of my job is to strike the delicate balance between being too assertive and not assertive enough.

My job is to serve as a human shield, to protect my people from external intrusions, distractions, and idiocy of every stripe — and to avoid imposing my own idiocy on them as well.

I strive to be confident enough to convince people that I am in charge, but humble enough to realize that I am often going to be wrong.

I aim to fight as if I am right, and listen as if I am wrong — and to teach my people to do the same thing.

One of the best tests of my leadership — and my organization — is “what happens after people make a mistake?”

Innovation is crucial to every team and organization. So my job is to encourage my people to generate and test all kinds of new ideas. But it is also my job to help them kill off all the bad ideas we generate, and most of the good ideas, too.

Bad is stronger than good. It is more important to eliminate the negative than to accentuate the positive.

How I do things is as important as what I do.

Because I wield power over others, I am at great risk of acting like an insensitive jerk — and not realizing it.

My personally selected top 10 from the links I shared on Twitter from 5/21/2010 thru 5/27/2010. Ok I’ll confess right off the bat, I cheated, there are 12 links this week. I just couldn’t cut them down. A couple of these deserve their own blog post so shame on me for not giving them the attention they deserve.

1. How (and Why) to Stop Multitasking - great article from Peter Bregman with some clear reasons why you should stop multi-tasking

A study showed that people distracted by incoming email and phone calls saw a 10-point fall in their IQs.

What’s the impact of a 10-point drop? The same as losing a night of sleep. More than twice the effect of smoking marijuana.

Doing several things at once is a trick we play on ourselves, thinking we’re getting more done. In reality, our productivity goes down by as much as 40%. We don’t actually multitask. We switch-task, rapidly shifting from one thing to another, interrupting ourselves unproductively, and losing time in the process.

Even better are the six things he learned the week he stopped trying to multi-task. I really need to do this

First, it was delightful.

Second, I made significant progress on challenging projects

Third, my stress dropped dramatically.

Fourth, I lost all patience for things I felt were not a good use of my time.

Fifth, I had tremendous patience for things I felt were useful and enjoyable.

Sixth, there was no downside.

“As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.” – Andrew Carnegie

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” – Carl Jung

“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.” – Wayne Dyer

“I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.” “It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.” – Gandhi

“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” – Confucius

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

5. RT @kongtemplation: great interview tips for librarians from @lynnemthomas – Tips for Librarian on the job market: 4 tips from the interview stage – a must read for anyone looking for a job

Secret #1: If you have landed an interview, the search committee already believes that you are capable of doing the job as they have described it and as you have indicated on your CV and Cover letter.
Secret #2: Interviews really answer the question “am I willing to work with this particular person every day for the next 10 years?” for good and for ill, on both sides.
Secret #3: The search committee is terrified that you won’t like them, either.
Secret #4: We’re all hoping for The One. The Perfect Gig. The You-Can-Pry-My-Awesome-Job-Out-of-My-Cold-Dead-Hands connection. But mostly? Especially early in our careers, we’re looking for a job that will work pretty well for us, and the search committee is looking for someone to fill their job without making them regret their decision a year or two down the line.

6. “Quitting Facebook is pointless; challenging them to do better is not“ (Another blog post on the topic by moi) via @zephoria

People will not leave Facebook en masse, even if a new site were to emerge. Realistically, if that were enough, they could go to MySpace or Orkut or Friendster or Tribe. But they won’t. And not just because those sites are no longer “cool.” They won’t because they’ve invested in Facebook and they’re still hoping that Facebook will get its act together. Changing services is costly, just like moving apartments or changing jobs or breaking up in general. The deeper the relationship, the harder it is to simply walk away. And the relationship that Facebook has built with many of its users is very very very deep. When transition costs are high, people work hard to change the situation so that they don’t have to transition. This is why people are complaining, this is why they are speaking up. And it’s really important that those in power listen to what it is that people are upset about. The worst thing that those in power can do is ignore what’s going on, waiting for it to go away.

You don’t want to change.

You don’t feel courageous enough.

Your environment is holding you back.

You feel like giving up after one or three failures.

You don’t feel enough pain yet.

You don’t know how to practically make the change.

10 Why Controlling Bosses Have Unproductive Employees

…if your employees consider you a controlling person, even an unconscious thought of you can have a negative effect on their performance. If, for example, they were to happen to subliminally see, out of the corner of their eyes, your name flash for 60 milliseconds, you could expect them to start working less hard. Even if they didn’t intend to slack off.

But it’s no longer “technology” in 2020 anymore–it’s just how we get things done.

This article makes the interesting point that when technology truly does become ubiquitous, meaning we don’t even think about it we’ll turn our attention to things like art and science.

But if technology and the ability to be connected disappear further into the background, what will occupy our foreground? A bit of the humanity we’ve always valued in the “real world.

During the creation process:
1 – KNOW your material, do NOT memorize it.
2 – Tell stories.

When you arrive at the event:
3 – Find the room where you will be presenting, and get a feel for the layout.
4 – Attend any pre-show meetups/tweetups.
5 – Get to your session at least 15 mins early, so you have time to setup everything.

During your presentation:
6 – Thank everyone for showing up and MEAN IT.
7 – Let the audience know exactly what’s coming. .
8 – Move around.
9 – Realize that you WILL screw up, and likely no one will notice.
10 – Engage with the people that are engaged with you.
11 – Close the presentation by thanking the audience for coming (and mean it), then tell them how to get in touch with you.
12 – Let the audience ask questions.

After the event:
13 – Stay connected.

Among the top findings

Students use literal terms of addiction to characterize their dependence on media.

Students hate going without media. In their world, going without media means going without their friends and family.

Students show no significant loyalty to a news program, news personality or even news platform. Students have only a casual relationship to the originators of news, and in fact don’t make fine distinctions between news and more personal information. They get news in a disaggregated way, often via friends.

18- to 21-year-old college students are constantly texting and on Facebook—with calling and email distant seconds as ways of staying in touch, especially with friends.

Students could live without their TVs and the newspaper, but they can’t survive without their iPods.

Librarians Have No Monopoly On The Activities They Claim

There Are No Consequences For Failing To Adhere To Ethical Practices

Librarianship Is Too Generalized To Claim Any Expertise

’Librarian’ Assumes A Place Of Work, Rather Than The Work Itself

Peer Review In Librarianship Does Not Work Because There Is No Competitive Process To Go With It

Values Are Not Enough

The Primary Motivation For Professionalization Is The Monopoly Of Labor

Accredited Library Schools Do Not Adequately Prepare Students For Library Work

Competing Professions Are Offering Different Paradigms To Achieve The Same Goals

Nobody Can Name A ‘Great’ Librarian

Here is another great post from her about this issue comparing it to a face to face situation.

Public-ness has always been a privilege. For a long time, only a few chosen few got to be public figures. Now we’ve changed the equation and anyone can theoretically be public, can theoretically be seen by millions. So it mustn’t be a privilege anymore, eh? Not quite. There are still huge social costs to being public, social costs that geeks in Silicon Valley don’t have to account for. Not everyone gets to show up to work whenever they feel like it wearing whatever they’d like and expect a phatty paycheck. Not everyone has the opportunity to be whoever they want in public and demand that everyone else just cope.
