Plus even more local pages and other general stuff I am interested in like This American Life. So how on earth do I manage all that plus my friends? Lists!

Lists

First I’m a huge fan of lists. List NOT groups. Lists allows you to create, well a list, of people or pages but it doesn’t pull them into it, notify them or involve the other person or organization in anyway. It allows you to remove them at will, unlike groups. I advise you to stay clear of groups.

I create lists for things like local, library news and general news. When you are looking at your home page on Facebook you can see them on the drop down menu under “most recent”. Click on it will show you only the people and pages on that list. So if you’re only looking for library news, that’s all you’ll see.

If you aren’t familiar with Lists, you create lists by going to your friends page and clicking on the create list button. You can add people or pages by browsing or searching.

Postpost.com

Love, love, love this service. I blogged about it awhile back, but I use it almost every day.

PostPost is a news aggregator for the social generation, and collates the articles, videos, and photos your friends have found interesting enough to post.

Basically it shows you at a glance, in a nice newspaper type style, the links your friends, and the pages you like, have shared on Facebook. Great way to see news without status updates.

I get asked a lot how I keep up or “do it all” so I thought I’d start sharing some of my favorite tools. I cant’ remember how I discovered PostPost, but I do know this it has made it insanely easy to get the good stuff from Facebook. It’s easy to set up and use, first go to postpost.com allow access to your Facebook account, after that when you visit postpost.com it gives you a custom view of the links your contacts have posted to Facebook in a newspaper style view. You can choose to just see video, photos or links so no matter what you’re looking for its right there. My contacts share a lot of great information on Facebook but I can’t be logged in every minute to see what’s happening and so I love PostPost because it makes it easy to see at a glance what my contacts are sharing on Facebook. Some people just learned to deal with the feed, others like me, deleted all of this activity when they get back to a computer.

Last week Facebook started rolling out its latest and greatest profile update. At first I was merely annoyed with it. Why is my job, education, current city, hometown and langauge front and center on my profile. Don’t my friends already know this? It really felt like another push from Facebook to be The One Site. It bothered me because I know a lot of new people are using Facebook everyday, people who don’t understand Facebook’s privacy settings, agenda and policies. They aren’t looking to showcase their work they are looking to connect with friends and family, and Facebook is pushing them to use the site professionally. Something we know will most likely not end well.

Tonight I noticed something new instead of saying ”Bobbi Newman wrote on John Doe’s wall” it actually tells you exactly what I wrote. Even if you are not friends with John Doe. Even if his account is set to private.

I know there are people who will say – if you don’t want it see don’t post it. Whatever. They are missing the point. The point is this – That while this conversation may have taken place in a quasi-public sphere there is NO indication that I wanted this conversation broadcast. (I could argue that if my friends page is private and locked down that this was a private conversation but let’s just call it quasi-private since it happened on Facebook)

We seem to run into the same issue with Facebook’s privacy settings over and over. There is a huge difference in something being publicly available and it being publicized.

Think of it this way you and I are sitting in a coffee shop having a conversation at a table. This is a public venue so our conversation is happening in a public place, but it is just us and we’re conversing quietly so we have an assumption of some level of privacy. Now the guy next to us on his laptop with his headphones on could be listening but chances are he is not. So while this conversation is public it is not being broadcast or recorded.

Now imagine we are sitting in the same coffee shop in the same scenario and the guy at the table next to us is not only listening but he is recording our conversation and broadcasting it to people in the coffee shop and people on the street.

The first scenario accurately reflects how people treat Facebook conversations, we know we’re in public but we assume (right or wrong) that no one is listening or recording. Which is easy to do on Facebook despite past experiences because so much falls off the page in a few days and you forget it ever happened. What Facebook is doing in this latest update is the later scenario.

Even worse you’re given NO choice. I know there has been a lot of controversy of some of Facebook’s Privacy changes over the last couple of years but in most cases you could change your settings to modify these problems. In this case you can not. Facebook is now broadcasting all of your conversations.

What really kills me is I was looking for stories on this issue and I can’t find any. No one seems to care. Maybe we’re so used to being violated by Facebook we don’t even notice any more.

More about this issue:

My personally selected top 10 from the links I shared on Twitter from 5/21/2010 thru 5/27/2010. Ok I’ll confess right off the bat, I cheated, there are 12 links this week. I just couldn’t cut them down. A couple of these deserve their own blog post so shame on me for not giving them the attention they deserve.

1. How (and Why) to Stop Multitasking - great article from Peter Bregman with some clear reasons why you should stop multi-tasking

A study showed that people distracted by incoming email and phone calls saw a 10-point fall in their IQs.

What’s the impact of a 10-point drop? The same as losing a night of sleep. More than twice the effect of smoking marijuana.

Doing several things at once is a trick we play on ourselves, thinking we’re getting more done. In reality, our productivity goes down by as much as 40%. We don’t actually multitask. We switch-task, rapidly shifting from one thing to another, interrupting ourselves unproductively, and losing time in the process.

Even better are the six things he learned the week he stopped trying to multi-task. I really need to do this

First, it was delightful.

Second, I made significant progress on challenging projects

Third, my stress dropped dramatically.

Fourth, I lost all patience for things I felt were not a good use of my time.

Fifth, I had tremendous patience for things I felt were useful and enjoyable.

Sixth, there was no downside.

“As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.” – Andrew Carnegie

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” – Carl Jung

“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.” – Wayne Dyer

“I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.” “It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.” – Gandhi

“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” – Confucius

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

5. RT @kongtemplation: great interview tips for librarians from @lynnemthomas – Tips for Librarian on the job market: 4 tips from the interview stage – a must read for anyone looking for a job

Secret #1: If you have landed an interview, the search committee already believes that you are capable of doing the job as they have described it and as you have indicated on your CV and Cover letter.
Secret #2: Interviews really answer the question “am I willing to work with this particular person every day for the next 10 years?” for good and for ill, on both sides.
Secret #3: The search committee is terrified that you won’t like them, either.
Secret #4: We’re all hoping for The One. The Perfect Gig. The You-Can-Pry-My-Awesome-Job-Out-of-My-Cold-Dead-Hands connection. But mostly? Especially early in our careers, we’re looking for a job that will work pretty well for us, and the search committee is looking for someone to fill their job without making them regret their decision a year or two down the line.

6. “Quitting Facebook is pointless; challenging them to do better is not“ (Another blog post on the topic by moi) via @zephoria

People will not leave Facebook en masse, even if a new site were to emerge. Realistically, if that were enough, they could go to MySpace or Orkut or Friendster or Tribe. But they won’t. And not just because those sites are no longer “cool.” They won’t because they’ve invested in Facebook and they’re still hoping that Facebook will get its act together. Changing services is costly, just like moving apartments or changing jobs or breaking up in general. The deeper the relationship, the harder it is to simply walk away. And the relationship that Facebook has built with many of its users is very very very deep. When transition costs are high, people work hard to change the situation so that they don’t have to transition. This is why people are complaining, this is why they are speaking up. And it’s really important that those in power listen to what it is that people are upset about. The worst thing that those in power can do is ignore what’s going on, waiting for it to go away.

You feel like giving up after one or three failures.

You don’t feel enough pain yet.

…if your employees consider you a controlling person, even an unconscious thought of you can have a negative effect on their performance. If, for example, they were to happen to subliminally see, out of the corner of their eyes, your name flash for 60 milliseconds, you could expect them to start working less hard.
Most notably and as always danah boyd gets to the heart of the matter.

The battle that is underway is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It’s a battle over choice and informed consent. It’s unfolding because people are being duped, tricked, coerced, and confused into doing things where they don’t understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely unfair. It gives users the illusion of choice and hides the details away from them “for their own good.”

I have paid very little attention to Facebook’s connections and the community pages it creates until yesterday. Yesterday I took a closer look at connections and my profile page. Now like many libraries my library has a Facebook page it looks like this. I kept the library in my work history when I click on that name on my info tab I see this – a community page. At the top is says Our goal is to make this Community Page the best collection of shared knowledge on this topic. You can also get us started by suggesting a relevant Wikipedia article or the Official Site. Wikipedia? really? ok. Now I’m not sure what caused the creation I suspect it was me leaving it my work history. Fine. Why didn’t it tie to the official page? So I start looking into community pages.* This is what I’ve been able to determine.
So if someone posts about your library it will show up on the wall like this.

Now for those of you worried about your privacy the good news is if you have your privacy settings right you wont show up to others

What does this mean for your library?

You might have a Facebook community page. You might have more than one if there is any variation in the name or if you have branches. Anything anyone posts on Facebook with the keyword will show up on the wall. You can’t control it. You can’t respond to it. Even if you “like” the page it wont show up in your news feed so you would need to go there to monitor it.

This maybe PRs worst nightmare. You can’t replace it with an official page, you can’t ask them to delete it. The only thing I can suggest is if you don’t have a Wikipedia entry on your library or business, get one up.

*From Facebook’s FAQs

What are Community Pages?

Community Pages are a new type of Page that enable you to see what people are saying about the things that matter to you, and discover the friends and people who share these connections with you. They are similar to any other Page to which you can connect, although they won’t generate stories in your News Feed, and won’t be maintained by a single author. Where available, they also show Wikipedia content for the relevant topic, which Facebook has licensed under the creative commons license.

We think your experience on Facebook will improve as your profile is turned into a living map of all the connections that matter to you, instead of a static list of your interests.

http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17110

How are Community Pages different from official Pages or Facebook Groups?

Community Pages are built around topics, causes or experiences. Official Pages are maintained by authorized representatives of a business, brand, celebrity, or organization, and they can create and share content about the entities that they represent. Community Pages, on the other hand, won’t generate stories in your News Feed, and won’t be maintained by a single author.

While Groups allow you to communicate directly with other people on Facebook about a specific subject, Community Pages simply enable you to learn more about and see what others are saying about additional topics that interest you.

http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17111

Can I edit the content on a Community Page?

No. When available, we update the information and profile picture based on the article for that topic in Wikipedia. At this time, there is no way for people who choose to connect with a Community Page to add their own pictures or edit the information. http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17112

How can I tell the difference between official Pages and Community Pages?

Community Pages have slightly different content than official Pages. When available, they display a primary picture straight from the Wikipedia page of that topic, along with an info section also from Wikipedia. Related posts from other people on Facebook will also be displayed in real time.

However, since Community Pages are another type of Page, we don’t differentiate between them when listed on your profile or in search results.

http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=17113

What if there isn’t a Wikipedia article for a Community Page topic?

Community Pages are meant to be the best collection of shared knowledge on topics that interest you. Where available, they show Wikipedia content for the relevant topic, which Facebook has licensed under the creative commons license.

If we can’t find the right article from Wikipedia, we might be asking for help from the community. You may see messaging on these Community Pages inviting you to make these Pages more useful and interesting by signing up to contribute in the future or by suggesting a Wikipedia article.
