UKSG pt 1

I’ve arrived in Torquay, and it’s only day one of the conference but I’ve already seen a couple of things that are different from the US conferences I’ve attended that I’m impressed with, I’d love to see this practice at more conferences. Included with the conference each day are a lunch and dinner. It’s a great opportunity to meet and talk with other people, which is one of the best parts of going to conferences. You can sit with someone different at every meal, hear different perspectives and exchange ideas with out the hassle of trying to meet people in your classes to meet up with later (especially nice if you’ve traveled alone and/or you don’t know loads of people), find a place with decent food and worry about how you’ll split the bill. Even better, the food is fabulous and wine is provided with dinner! On a side note, it snowed the first 2 days here! Teach Me More! Fun & Gaming in Libraries

Teach Me More! Fun & Gaming in Libraries

Chad Boeninger presented about Adapting Library Services to the Needs of Gamers the first half of this session. I found this really interesting, even though I am a gamer I’d never really thought about the differences between gamers and non-gamers. For example: game encourage decision making, interaction, and imerision. Gamers learn by doing, if they try something and it fails they will try another way, there is no one right way to achieve your goal games teach problem solve skills and team work games are hard, perseverance pays off So how do we reach these people? Intergrating Libraries & Communities

This was a great presentation that started out with a look at Hennepin’s wonderful Bookspace, hop over and take a look at it, it’s impressive. Just some of the things that really stand out pictures of patrons reading blog enews sign ups main page index Featured lists – created by librarians What We’re Reading – created by staff Reader’s Lists – patrons are creating these! Genre pages New titles list Librarian tips and news Who is doing all this work? There is a Bookspace Coordinator, a senior Libririan in Web Services, a bookspace worskshop and bookspace coordinators. The interface for contribution is easy! Staff are required to contribute content, it is part of their job, not volunteer. Robin did a write up of this from her IT point of view and you can see the whole presentation here (scroll down). Live from the Wild Plum!

October 27, 2007
By

I’m blogging live from the Wild Plum this morning because even though the hotel has WiFi it does not actually work. Luckily it’s right across the street. Yesterday was a very long day (traveled for 17 hours), but if our plane had not been delayed in LAX we would not have seen the amazing sunset as we flew to Monterey, it lasted the entire flight and was truly stunning. This is my first time attending Internet Librarian and I’m thrilled to be here. Monterey is beautiful and there are some great sessions scheduled.   I’ve put up my schedule and I’ll try to blog everyday about the sessions I’m attending so please let me know if you have any questions! Robin and are are also blogging jointly on our work blog Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Share on FriendFeed Buzz it up Share on netvibes share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tumblr it Buzz it up Subscribe to the comments on this post Print for later Tell a friend

MLA Presentation

October 5, 2007
By

Yesterday I drove 6 hours round trip to give a presentation (Learning Web 2.0 – Technologies and Beyond) with Robin at the Missouri Library Association Conference. This is the second time we’ve given this presentation, the first one was a Telepresention through MOREnet. I have to say we rocked the house at MLA! We were both spot on with our presentation (we alternate back and forth throughout), the audience was receptive and interested, and we got a lot of great questions at the end. One person even asked if we were interested in taking our show on the road, we said sure! So we might be presenting again later this month.
