I often feel like Goldilocks at IL after attending a variety of conferences over the last year. Some, like ALA, though with its own perks are just too big. Others are just too small. IL is just right. It is big enough that there is a wide variety of topics, something for public, academic, school and special libraries and something for all levels of expertise and comfort. It’s small enough that it is easy enough to get from one session to another, you’ll never miss a session because you couldn’t catch a bus or walk in time. Let’s just skip over the location, sure is amazing, and if you’re trying to choose between 2 similar conference the fact that one takes place in Monterey should sway you. But when you’re looking to convince your boss that you need to go “there are sea lions! and an aquarium!” won’t cut it.

1. It’s just right. Not too big, not too small, just right.

There are plenty of restaurants and interesting things to occupy your down time within walking distance, no need to rent a car or take a cab.

2. Intimate - The size and location of the conference just makes it more intimate. Instead of rushing from session to session you’ll have time to ask one on one questions from the speakers afterwards or chat with the new friend you just made. You never know who you’ll meet!

3. Diversity – Expand your horizons with librarians from all types of libraries and mingle freely with librarians who serve all types of populations. It is much easier to get out of your silo and learn about new idea others are trying and you can apply them to your library.

4. Learning – You’ll hear presentations full of suggestions and tips from young and old (to the profession not age) alike. It’s important to update your librarian skills and knowledge, the world is changing so quickly around us don’t get left behind.

5. Easy – There are plenty of learning experiences disguised as fun like the Gaming & Gadgets Petting Zoo on Sunday night, the Great Web 2.0 Face off on Tuesday evening or the QR Code Treasure Hunt.

6. Explore – sign up for one of the many dine-arounds based on a common topic and you’ll get a chance to explore your topic with like-minded professionals, a conversation you’d never get to have at home. This is a great chance to expand your personal learning network and create great contacts you can share information and brainstorm with over the next year.

7. Immersion – Sign up for one of the many pre-conference workshops* on Saturday and Sunday to get in-depth instruction.

8. Knowledge. – Knowledge is power, even if you don’t immediately implement every new thing you heard about (please don’t actually do this) you’ll have a better understanding of what others are doing so you can respond to suggestions and ideas at your library with authority.

9. Helping Hand – They’ll help you with your justification . They also offer a group discount if more than one person from your library attends.

10. The Vendors – in keeping in line with the rest of the conference the exhibit hall is just right, not too big not too small. You’ll have plenty of time to ask those questions you’ve been thinking over. Even better you wont have to wear your practical librarian shoes to do it, put on some fabulous heels (sorry boys) and get to it!

My Schedule

Of course I’ll be there! This year I’m moderating a track and doing a cybertour in addition to regular presentation sessions, so stop by!

From the website:

Libraries and legacy media always shared a common purpose — helping us acquire the information we need to be engaged, informed (and entertained) citizens. But they used different tools — newspapers, broadcast stations and books. Now they all share the web, information technology and increasingly a mission — fostering civic engagement and literacy.

As the tools and mission converge, it’s time to ask: “What’s possible at the intersection of libraries and journalism that serves the information needs of communities and democracy?”

“America’s libraries need sufficient funding to serve as centers for information, training, and civic dialogue,” the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities concluded in a 2009 report.

Journalism That Matters, the The MIT Center for Future Civic Media and other co-sponsors are staging a two-day workshop to identify, consider and organize methods for jouranalists and librarians to foster civic engagement. The two days will feature dialogue and participant-defined breakouts, beginning weeks in advance with pre-gathering interactive discussions, and continuing after we adjourn.

The latest national data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services show that library visits and circulation climbed nearly 20% from 1999 to 2008. Since then, experts say, technology has continued to drive in-person visits, circulation and usage. Now, the digital sphere is expanding: 82% of America’s more than 16,000 public libraries have Wi-Fi up from 37% four years ago, according to the American Library Association. A growing number of libraries are launching mobile websites and smart-phone applications.

A Pew Center study found that young adults are heaviest library users, even though they are also on the web. Pew and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign conducted the study jointly. One anecdotal finding: Libraries are increasingly creating social spaces within their walls.

The American Library Association cites these issues for libraries:

Empowering patrons to create their own news and media at the grassroots level. Such endeavors might include enhancing patrons’ skills in creating do-it-yourself forms of media using technology tools and resources available at the library

Generating news-like content via community documentation projects hosted at a library

Partnering with other like-minded organizations to create news collectives, non-profits, or citizen journalism projects.

Last week I had the honor of attending the TechSoup Global Contributors Summit. When I received the invitation from Sarah at TechSoup for Libraries I knew I had to go for several reason including escaping the echo chamber and it was at the Microsoft campus in Silicon Valley. Some background about TechSoup: TechSoup is a nonprofit with a clear focus: providing other nonprofits and libraries with technology that empowers them to fulfill their missions and serve their communities. As part of that goal, we provide technology products and information geared specifically to the unique challenges faced by nonprofits and libraries. Learning resources, including articles, blogs, free webinars, and forums led by expert hosts are available to all users.

Last week I had the honor of attending the TechSoup Global Contributors Summit. When I received the invitation from Sarah at TechSoup for Libraries I knew I had to go for several reason including escaping the echo chamber and it was at the Microsoft campus in Silicon Valley.

Some background about TechSoup:

TechSoup is a nonprofit with a clear focus: providing other nonprofits and libraries with technology that empowers them to fulfill their missions and serve their communities. As part of that goal, we provide technology products and information geared specifically to the unique challenges faced by nonprofits and libraries.

Learning resources, including articles, blogs, free webinars, and forums led by expert hosts are available to all users. Once qualified with TechSoup, nonprofits and libraries can access 400+ technology products from more than 40 donor partners — including Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, Intuit, and Symantec. All donated and discounted products are available for a small admin fee that supports our work in the United States and around the world.

For those of you not familiar with TechSoup for Libraries is a:

nonprofit devoted to making technology and technology education available and affordable to nonprofits and libraries all over the world. As of June 2009, it has distributed over 4.9 million donated and discounted products to nonprofits and public libraries across the globe, freeing up more than US$1.4 billion dollars for other uses.

TechSoup for Libraries grew out of a desire to specifically address the technology needs of public libraries. An important part of the program is the information developed as part of the MaintainIT Project, which was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and managed by TechSoup Global. The Project gathered stories from public libraries about how they support their public computers. These tips and techniques are published in “Cookbooks” and articles, available for free on our website. TechSoup for Libraries continues to share these stories from the field so libraries can keep learning from each other.

So why the Summit and why was I there?

Our Contributors’ Summit will be the place where opportunity and action meet. Two hundred and forty representatives of our networks and other affinity groups (funders, corporate donors, social media experts, capacity-building organizations and other social change technologists) will convene at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus to participate in two days of programming focused on provoking discussion about—how these networks, and the capabilities that power them, can be effectively leveraged to create greater impact. We will especially focus on welding together product donations, data services and human capacity to help build truly resilient civil society, both in the wake of a disaster like Haiti’s and in the developing (as well as the developed) countries of the world.

There were over 200 people presenting from 45 different counties and two librarians.

We were encouraged to be present and not multi-task during the summit so I left my Netbook in my room and took notes by hand. I’ve used this approach before at other non-library events like TEDxAtlanta and I may start employing it at library events too. The biggest problem is find the time to type out your own notes (and decipher your handwriting!).

The majority of my take-away is thinking, planning, collaborating and taking action so I don’t have a lot to share in the way of notes but here are some key points, ideas and discoveries.

We are smarter together.

Conference cocaine - don’t worry no drugs involved or required it’s the high you get from meeting kindred spirits and hatching plans for world domination. Of course you get home and the real world sets in and you develop a hangover

The Story of Stuff – check it out, an amazing example of success story including themes like “going viral” and Creative Commons License

Network is about trust

If someone else is doing something well, let it go, do something else.

You can’t be a wallflower and change the world

Our network can change the world.

You need to network to find the people who are good at the things you are not.

If you like everyone in your network, your network isn’t big enough. It’s not a network its a club. – Annie Leonard

The network is the hero not a single individual.

Learn to recognize the traps you get caught up on that keep you from making progress.

Random Hacks of Kindness – can’t believe I wasn’t aware of this before. Thought – how can libraries harness something like this in their local community?

The people who have the problem we are trying to solve are often scared of technology.

I also co-hosted a dive session with David and Sarah specifically about libraries. It was a general brain-storming thought sharing session and of course I took notes

Are we (libraries) operating as membership organizations? What are the pros and cons of being a membership organization?

See libraries as a flexible space, responsive to the needs of users

Why aren’t we advertising libraries as a co-working space? It would connect us with a demographic we often miss – 20 somethings.

We are confusing the way we do the work with the work we do

We are failing to recognize the ways people are using us that don’t align with our preconceived notion of how people us (see milkshake mistake)

Get buy-in and emotional connections with us and services if we allow input from patrons even if that input is just “me too” The example given here was one patron suggestions adding a table or an outlet in a corner, we hand a sign in the corner and allow others who agree to sign their name or initials

Who is driving our programs? Marketing? Finance? PR? Who should be?

I want to thank Sarah and Daniel and everyone at TechSoup for inviting me and making me feel welcome. I was worried I’d be a fish out of water but it was a wonderful experience.Similar Posts:

David Watson discovery systems

to get the rss for a specific journal you need to visit the specific site or vendor,

different silos for information, need to wait for vendors to create mobile system

bring data together in aggregated system have one local for info

if everything is all together in one place, books article etc does that really help students?

are libraries giving up too much control to the cloud?

Panel response

Griffey – expected to see collapse of these databases and vendors fighting each other

Etches – federated searching was a disaster, is discovery system better?

David – system helps level playing field

Amanda – user experience buzz word for 2009

People can’t agree on what it means, user experience design is about designing everything buildings etc, but interest for her (us) is web

Visual design coupled with interactive design, how does that make our users feel?

We aren’t ready to make our users feel we need to keep talking about user interface and usability

Mobile interfaces are necessarily stripped down because they have to be

Mobile browsing – if site doesn’t have a mobile version a user will not spend much time on it, she either finds what she needs right away or moves on,

people are starting to seek out the mobile interface on a regular screen because they know that it will get them the info they need faster

What we do for mobile is really going to affect what we do for web design in general, mobile design with force user experience designers to re-evaluate and reverse design

Usability will continue to be separate from user experience design

Online automated usability testing, pay them & install on server

Analytics – how do you measure your users experience on your website? We aren’t selling anything so we can’t measure sales

Panel response

Greg – who is responsible for development of user experience? We each place reinvent the wheel or will we have standards

Lauren – think about users we serve, public is different from undergrad or even grad

Amanda – need to talk more to usability community

Jason – building a new lib at TN , thinking a lot about physical user experience – how do digital & brick & mortar usability interact?

Amanda – literature talks about providing a more holistic experience, step back and figure out how it actually fits in with what users experience when they come into the building, be really cognizant that what you design online mirrors what you’re designing physically, signage and headers match, taxonomy

Joe – mobile tech

some of the mobile tech we’re going to focus on we’ve already heard of, we’ve reached saturation and now are driven by user demand

sms – oldest of mobile tech, strongest, most universal, most flexible, more than communication tool, also a research tool, it has just been introduced to reference but has really blown up

We need to transfer our skills into new environments, translate from reference desk to 140 characters

Print collections are only relevant when content isn’t available digitally, also tactical appeal

Libraries need Basic things like enough outlets, or stronger cell reception

Location based gaming, like 4sq, something that bring competition into location, allure to things are that are location based

Twitter emerged in 2007, blew up in 2008, standard in 2009

Mobile techs are going to come & go, we need to be flexible and be able to adapt, everyday struggle to keep up with mobile tech

There should not be tension between those who are ready to adapt & those who are not?

Skills – although nothing major is changing, our role is the same, but everything else is different, should allow change to happen but should not allow compromise of soul of libraries

Let’s learn together, let’s play and let’s go through it

Panel response

David – for smaller libraries, ones without staff with time to play, what should they be focusing on in terms of mobile tech?

Joe – every library has this problem, not enough staff, not enough time, strategize services, have to make decisions on what is greater value, how do we balance servicing all patron groups, we can’t do everything for everyone, how do we decide priority?

Lauren – augmented reality –

blending virtual data with real world, been thought about for years, but is becoming more mainstream

combo of real & virtual in real time, starting to see on smart phones, with aps, hold up phone & have data overlaid with what device “sees” very new & still buggy

trail on the hockey puck if you’re watching on tv, same for 1st down line on football field, people who are there in person don’t see these things they are virtual

real estate app will know where you are what houses are for sale in the neighborhood you’re in, prices houses have sold for etc

AAA app that lets you find discount places

Library application – how to use call number system, how to select appropriate article if in serial section

From panel

David – library application is cool, but example of coliseum sounds even neater, do you see libraries to take ownership of these, of cities?

Lauren – see some place with resources to create input that other places can use to input to help standard,

Jason – overlap between libraries & AR is the unique stuff in our archives, if we can get to standard for display if libraries can then really dive into archive & use as teaching training tools for community, what did main street look like in 1890 & 1990 etc

Joe – how libraries leverage it for collections?

David – as we move towards more electronic collections, so if browsing physical stacks can now see there is an eBook on same subject

Jason – Mobile applications

2009 was the year of the iphone app store, app store opening in mid 2008 July, in Jan 2009 apeoplee announced 500 million apps downloaded, 4 months after billion, 5 mos later 2 billion

134000 iphone apps , how many are library specific? 4? 5? DC public, OCLC and Librarything just launched one called Local Books,

weird things now have apps, like printers from HP, Ford announced software development kit at CES, everyone is jumping on this bandwagon

2010 will be a bigger year for apps

when iphone launched there was no app store, Steve jobs said no need for apps because if you can write for web will work on the iphone,

Steve Jobs was right, 2010 will be the death of apps CSS3 & html 5 brings new things with it, allows drag & drop from browser to desktop, best supported in mobile browsers right now, FF, chrome, Safari, ‘

If you write it once in html 5 it will work anywhere desktop tablet iphone, don’t need to recreate and support multiple platform

Response from panel

David – glad to see app die because background in programming & one of things is don’t repeat yourself, if you have apps across multiple platforms you do have to repeat yourself, mobile sites are completely separate from regular site, have to make changes 2 places

IE does not support HTML 5

Twitter question – is it the year all apps die or just mobile apps?

Griffey – probably not desktop, about 95 % of work is on a browser, we will see less of things like everyone using Microsoft office

Has apps been a worthwhile investment?

Part 2 topic introduced each person gets 3 min to respond

Reinvention of the book - Rocket eBook reader, bulky heavy, shows kindle, these 2 devices are remarkably similar, in terms of great advances in tech, not so sure we’re there.
Griffey – 2 things he saw at CES, he things eBook hardware is dying,

Copia – software platform that reinvents electronic reading as a social experience, similar to LT & GR but actual interaction with text, can take notes & share notes with friends, can sync comments & sections, can highlight section & send to people, relies on text its self to drive sociality of it, copia will be selling hardware, but is platform so will be pushing to tablets, desktops etch

In 10 days our minds with be blown by apeoplee tablet, may be doing something with copia

Blio – attempt by Ray Kurzweil & others content by B& T, non ereader format for reading of books, full visual representations of book to take place, can imbed interactive media, example anatomy textbook, instructor has access to website to create the quiz within the book (read more on Wired)

Lauren –

issue of ownership with eBooks

for a lot of people reading is still a solitary experience that you share with author of book

Issue of ownership has kept her from getting a device, when you buy a paper book you can share with anyone, but eBooks are tied to device

Now seeing that we’re seeing that you are not actually buying eBooks but rather leasing it with license that publisher puts on it, seeing some movement in loaning from Nook, some allow eBooks from library to be loaded

Joe –

doesn’t see the ereader device having a place in libraries, should be focusing on the contents, eBooks,

can’t get library books on iphone, so using kindle app to pay for book to put on iphone, because of convenience,

Could replace everything we do with print books with eBooks, different venues might have to have different technologies

Amanda –

eBooks are being read on PC, device agnostic platforms for eBooks, embedding multimedia

David –

electronic content is allows students to diving into very specific articles or text, may used more complex info that they need especially undergrad, if eBooks makes access to this type of content as easy as electronic, will allow undergrads to get the material they actually need

If we are licensing journals and books do we become collection less libraries?

Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital social networks. Since 2005, when Professor Sue Thomas introduced this concept in the UK, transliteracy has been taken up and explored by a broad range of academics and practitioners, from information scientists to literary theorists, artists and writers.

The first Transliteracy Conference will take place at Leicester’s new Phoenix Square Digital Media Centre, on 9 Feb 2010. This one-day event offers an opportunity for academics, artists, business people and practitioners to share discoveries, ideas, and creative works that amplify and augment transliteracy research.

This Call for Presentations invites 250 word abstracts. Presentations should be 10-15 minutes in duration, and can be used to show work or deliver a short paper. The Conference Panel will group presentations together thematically in sessions scheduled to include time to explore the issues and ideas raised through discussion. Phoenix Square is well equipped with the latest technology, so presenters will be able to show work on screen and via the internet.

Themes to be explored include:

transliteracy and libraries

transliteracy and the arts

transliteracy in education

transliteracy in communications

transliteracy in the workplace

transliteracy and transdisciplinarity

transliteracy in action – examples of transliterate works, like digital fiction, networked arts projects, or library resources

Abstracts should be submitted in the body of an email totransliteracy@googlemail.com Please include a 100-word bio and contact email address.

Deadline for abstracts is 1 December, 2009; notification of acceptance by 18 December, 2009.

Further information can be obtained from Louisa Allen attransliteracy@googlemail.com

We expect to charge a modest delegate fee to cover costs.

Selected materials from the conference will be published online athttp://www.transliteracy.com

*I was fortunate on my travels home, I did make it home with only minor delays (comparatively) and missing one bag which showed up 24 hours later, intact. I am grateful I was able to attend and extremely grateful for all the people who talked with me in hallway, coffee shop, sessions halls, exhibit halls, at dinner & coffee, and on the street. I wish we’d had more time to talk. I wish I’d had the nerve to approach more people I only know by name, I’m a little socially awkward. (Once I get to know you, you can’t shut me up) I vow to do better next time. Until then, ciao!Similar Posts:

We should reward success and failure, punish inaction

Innovation comes from quantity

The Art of Woo: Using Strategic Persuasion to Sell Your Ideas

Results only work environment ROWE, came from Best Buy
Frustrated with cooperate environment, that work was all about coming in early & leaving late, or look like they were, in workplace we are treated like children,
We have more autonomy as college students that we do as adults
Set up system so not punching clock only judged on out put, meetings were optional, needed to show value of meeting to get people to it
After 2 years of keeping stats & showed productivity went through the roof, took to upper mngment, did it across the company, then wrote a book called Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It: No Schedules, No Meetings, No Joke–the Simple Change That Can Make Your Job Terrific

Find the right audience
One small step
Under the radar
Speak the language of the ppl you want to convince

MIT Libraries Betas page
Libraries.mit.edu/betas
Can put things out there and get feedback from users to help support if/when do a larger project.
Easy to get onto beta, hard to get off or graduate, criteria at libstaff.mit.edu/uig/betas.html

I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones – John Cage

Rebecca Jones
To influence others we first have to understand ourselves
We have to see ourselves as influencers
We must be clear on what we want ot see happen
We must learn new approaches

Effective influencers tend to be
Expert in a specific domain
Early adapters
Opinion leaders
Knowledge about the issues
Views as trust worthy
With connections
Use knowledge & connections to help others

Assume everyone is going to be an ally
Be clear with your message
Whats in it for them

Get to know ppl keep in touch regardless of lvl
Understand what your org hidden org chart is
Build trust
Be clear on what you want
Be clear on what you have to say & where your lines are drawn
Communicate clearly

Being part of the quotient

Ask for the sale
Close the sale
Is there any reason why we can’t move fwd with this

The facts will not persuade people, the more you throw out the less they listen

When ppl see something new they think you’re taking away the old, so start with what is staying the same

Clarity
Competence
