Myspace Guidelines

September 7, 2007

The Library has had a Myspace page since our Learning 2.0 program. Part of the duties for my new position is to create goals and guidelines for all of the Library’s social networking sites. When I started writing the Myspace Guidelines I was surprised to find despite the proliferation of Libraries with Myspace pages, I could find only one with a policy. The Guidelines have been approved and MRRL’s Myspace page is official! The administrator of the Library’s Myspace page will follow these guidelines in addition to the Library’s Public Service Policies Purpose • Connect with teens, authors and pertinent adults • Promote library programs, events and services through blogging and bulletins Content • Information about library programs, events and services • Materials owned by the library • Information about authors and their works • Links to other webpage. As a social networking site, links will be made to pages created by people outside the Library; the Library has no control over the content of those pages. Comments • All comments will be held for approval by the administrator • Comments deemed inappropriate for a public space will not be approved • Comments containing html that may interfere with the

We are del.icio.us!

We are del.icio.us!

With a “to do” list a mile long I feel as though I’ll never get anything finished. Technically this isn’t finished either as it’s meant to be a living page and it’s well on it’s way. My library is using our del.icio.us account to create our Weblinks page for our patrons. Robin set up the page using dishy and I’ve been busy adding links left and right. This is so much easier than maintaining a classic weblinks page, the Reference staff only has to know how to use del.icio.us and agree on a taxonomy for tags. No need to know html or use page editing software, which makes our website designer happy too. No creating each link manually or worry about ordering and descriptions. All I have to do it find the webpage, tag it with del.icio.us, assign my tags, add any descriptors I feel are necessary and voila it’s on our page. It’s just as easy to delete or update links too. As I’ve been browsing other Library’s Weblinks page for links to include on ours, I was surprised to see no one else using this method. I’m sure they are out there, I just haven’t found one yet.

Finding my way

August 8, 2007

I started this blog, then stopped blogging and deleted all the posts. I felt I lacked direction. With the Learning 2.0 program, and some other factors I’ve been given the chance at a new position with in my Library – Digital Services and Resources Librarian. I don’t claim to be an expert or even an advanced user, I do claim to be finding my way through the 2.0 jungle like many others. The thing about finding your way is it’s easy to loose track of where you started and how far you’ve come, the wrong paths you took and the shortcuts you found. Since I’m no stranger to blogging I know what a great record it can be of the journey. Yesterday was my first day in my new position. I’m definitely still getting situated, but I can’t wait to see where I end up.
